OH Cards Therapy
OH Cards therapy is a powerful, projective tool for self-discovery and accessing the subconscious mind. I guide clients through a gentle, non-directive process using evocative imagery and words. The cards act as a mirror, helping to bypass the critical conscious mind to uncover hidden thoughts, feelings, and perspectives. This is not about fortune-telling; it's a collaborative exploration ideal for gaining clarity on personal challenges, unlocking creativity, and fostering profound inner dialogue in a safe, confidential space.
The OH Cards were co-created in the late 1970s by Canadian artist Ely Raman and German poet and translator Moritz Egetmeyer. Raman provided the intuitive, watercolor imagery, while Egetmeyer shaped the project's philosophical foundation. Together, they created a tool not for telling fortunes, but for exploring the subconscious.
The psychological principle behind the OH Cards is rooted in projective techniques, a concept central to psychoanalysis and famously used by Carl Jung. The random combination of an image card and a word card acts as a non-directive stimulus for the subconscious mind. As individuals spontaneously project their own thoughts, feelings, and memories onto the ambiguous cards, deeply held material surfaces into conscious awareness. This process bypasses the inner critic, facilitating a powerful, self-led exploration. The facilitator’s role is not to interpret, but to hold a safe space for this inner dialogue, allowing for profound self-discovery, integration, and personal healing.
This process integrates seamlessly with mindfulness practices. While mindfulness teaches non-judgmental awareness of the present moment, the OH Cards provide a tangible focus for this awareness. As clients observe their spontaneous reactions to the cards without criticism, they engage in active mindfulness—acknowledging subconscious material with curiosity and acceptance. The fusion of projective psychology and mindful observation creates a powerful container for self-discovery, allowing clients to access deeper layers of the psyche while maintaining a grounded, compassionate presence toward whatever arises.
